Specialist cactus nursery Somerset

Post by MalcolmP2 »

Many years ago whilst visiting Somerset we chanced upon a cactus grower (and we still have a few of their plants) but , ,

we cant remember where it was (/is) !
Somewhere in the Cheddar - Wells area we think.

Now that we live in N.Somerset it would be good to find it again :)
Any ideas please.

I think there was a nursery in that area called Bradley Batch, I remember visiting them maybe 30 years ago and got some nice plants. I don't think they've been in business for some while. Suggest you try Chris's link, or look at the list of nurseries on Cactus Mall.

I agree with Juster, there used to be the Bradley Batch nursery in Ashcott, run by John White, we stayed there one weekend at least 30 years ago. He gave up many years ago, I believe.

Yes, long gone as a nursery, but I did meet up with John White again a few years ago. THe B&B was good too with a discount for BCSS members! I still have some of his plants in my collection too.

Here is a note of him on the Forum from 2012 re. the first South West Mart:

Thanks for all your thoughts,
Yes, Bradley Batch fits the time line.
Oh dear, anno domini and the mists of time !

With no specialty nursery to visit, a consolation prize of three cacti were liberated from a local garden centre. Very difficult to photograph a white flower at High Noon in amazing Easter sunshine. Crushing the whites or having details lost in the shadows is the problem, I think I need an HDR camera !

Some pics for your amusement and delectation, and IDs? please
possibly two mammillaria ? dont know about the other small one :-

The white one looks like Mammillaria zeilmanniana f. albiflora, not sure about the others.

It means form (or forma) Malcolm, i.e. White-flowered form.
