Reb.heliosa
Hi all,I grew this plant from Stephen Brack seed years ago. Some time ago it lost its roots and I re rooted it in a plastic bowl and it flowers well in Tesco finest as seen in picture. So today as it is full of buds again I repotted it into a bigger and more traditional bowl and am well pleased. I then read that this plant has a tap root, not mine, it's a mass small roots that you find when re potting in the medium. Just wondered if it is living on its feeding roots and the tap root is not required. Strange. Cheers

Re: Reb.heliosa
Some Rebutias form tap roots, but I've not seen them on R. heliosa.

Hi Ralph, I agree. This is what I like about this forum, we are talking about growers with great experience that can help people like me to grow better plants. This is what I read re. tap roots on this plant. Either they are wrong or I have the plant wrongly named lol. Cheers

Eric
I have never been impressed with the descriptions or taxonomy on that web site or their sister web site Cactus Art, but I am always impressed with the photos.

Hi Ray, yes the pictures are really first class, it's a pity the info is sometime suspect. That's why as I mentioned in my previous post that this forum is a god send. Cheers

The first description reports a "radice napiformi" and "mit Rübenwurzel". This matches with the photo of the plant at the top of the page. https://www.cactuspro.com/lecture/Kakte ... 12.en.html

Re: Reb.heliosa
Hmm, maybe a seed grown plant/main stem has a tap root and plants from offsets never develop them? I'd have to check my own, but I'm pretty sure it has no tap root (it's not in a deep pot while I always put the tap roots in deeper pot, I got the plant from Mesa Garden and it's likely an offset).Phil_SK wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 6:28 am The first description reports a "radice napiformi" and "mit Rübenwurzel". I do remember the small albopectinata seedlings (close relation? they look similar) I just repotted as having a taproot.

Re: Reb.heliosa
Hi Astro, I grew these plants from Mesa Garden seed years ago. Not one developed a tap root. We all agree it's a lovely plant, but we really need to find out if we have a tap root or not as it impacts on whether to use a pot or a bowl. Cheers. PS thanks Phil for original description.
