Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
Is there anything left of the plant from which these cuttings came?

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
A couple of 6" stumps is all that's left. This doesn't include the branches I knocked off by accident that lay on the greenhouse floor for 3 months and have just rooted after a fortnight in wet sand. As if I needed any more plants …

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
ooh poor little plant, you must have some seriously scared plants that flinch when you have a knife. Must be why you have such nice plants, the poor growing ones get hacked up and others see the example and grow well so they ' aren't next '

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
It all started when I gave my Trichodiadema bulbosum a 'light' trim and I decided to save some for cuttings (see below) … the more woody parts of the stems ending up on the compost heap. The many Pelargonium crithmifolium and P. mirabile plants were next, but have a stay of execution this year.
Oh, and I didn't charge up the garden in a rage brandishing an 8" kitchen knife, in case that's the way it comes across. Tylecodon are poisonous, after all, so I used my penknife and I walked.

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
Not the best focused photos, but interesting to see how a sample of 5 of the Tylecodon have rooted. They form rings of root 'teeth' mainly round the inside and outside of the epidermis. Reminds me of the inside of a wasps nest when you cut across it. These roots are quite hard to the touch.

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
Excellent photos!
I find that my Tylecodon cuttings often form a swollen base to the stem before throwing out roots.

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
Thanks Ralph, yes there is the swollen base which you can see in the first photo. I didn’t have this good a root system on the original plants.

Re: Overenthusiasm with a knife
This is a new name to me, so I had to Google it. It appears to be a hybrid of Tylecodon paniculatus x cacalioides. Do you have a photo of the plant before you chopped it MikeDom? And does anyone know if it is of wild origin or from cultivation?. The fact that it has been given a Latin epithet suggests wild origin.
