Unusual Weingartia Flowers

Post by ralphrmartin »

Usually, Weingartias have lemon-yellow flowers, or paleish orange. But these are different. The outer petals of the one at the bottom are almost black.

Always good to see an unusual plant and flowers
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Ralph is that Weingartia canigueralii or W. rauschii as they are the only 2 I know with that type of flower.
canigueralii does have a synonym of W. perplexiflora , so someone was thinking the same as you Ralph.

The top plant looks very much like a Weingartia/Sulcorebutia hybrid which I obtained a few years back from Jim Kirtley in Alnwick (a big Sulcorebutia grower at the time). I'm unsure of it's exact parentage but it's certainly a fine looking plant Ralph (tu)

It certainly does not look like any wild-origin plant that I know, but the flowers are near the top as one would expect from some weingartias. I suspect that Ross is near the mark, it s the sort of thing I might expect if I crossed Sulcorebutia rauschii with Weingartia neumanniana.

Well, I acquired it as a Weingartia in the strict sense, not a Sulcorebutia:
It was stated to be a form of Weingartia kargliana, and the body is certainly close to some other plants I have under that name.
Plenty of Sulcos have purple flowers.

Whatever it is, it's a handsome plant.

Ross, thanks for your input, and Terry, I agree I have never seen that colour on a Weingartia in habitat.

There's a photo of this plant on p213 of Gordon Rowley's last book on new cultivars. My plant, the one in the book, came from John Pilbeam as Sulco Rauschii x Weingartia Neumanniana. It's easy to grow and flowers every year.

I note from my records that my similar plant was originally created from a cross made by the late John Donald but I guess others may have produced similar hybrids.

Thanks Stuart, that seems pretty definitive. Time for a new label, I think.
