Another unusual hybrid

Post by ralphrmartin »

Supposedly Lobivia silvestrii x Cleistocactus straussii, originally from Gordon Rowley. It has weird little flowers.

Well that's weird. I never would have imagined they'd cross.

I can’t say it is an improvement on either parent

Yes, I see what you mean. I guess it's grown for "scientific interest" rather than beauty...

What does it do when it gets bigger, stay upright or sprawl?

Well, that plant is 21 years old, and no sign of sprawling yet. It doesn't get very big.

How weird! I assumed it was a few years old.

It is a cross involving the same two genera as xCleistopsis 'Helm's Neue' . That hybrid is Chamaecereus (or whatever) sylvestrii x Cleistocactus (Hildewintera) winteri. It is interesting that the flower shape of the Cleistocactus parent is dominant in both of these crosses. There the similarity ends, because 'Helm's Neue' really is a terrific plant with attractive flowers that are produced in quantity right through the summer growing season.
