There is a definition of organic gardening but I don't think it universally applied and where food is concerned it doesn't have to be 100% organic to be called organic.

Diatomaceous earth is finely ground diatoms so mainly silica with some alumina and other trace components. I use it for my poultry. It is supposed to dessicate and chafe the surface coating on red mites they are prone to. Thats the reason why birds dust bathe. I haven't used it on my plants as yet.
