Folk who post sideways images - do they check via preview? If they do and it's wrong orientation then my suggestion is don't post. If it appears correctly report it to the moderators/web master.

I also accept Tony R's post regarding waiting for new forum software/site. But this seems more hope than guaranteeing the problem will be solved.

And if phpbb software is the problem then ditch phbb is the only sensible option for a society which aspires to a world class presence.
There is a sideways picture on a recent post, but if you click on the right place to get a full screen view it is displayed correctly. I downloaded it and it displays correctly in the file explorer preview. Opening it in a photo editor it displays correctly so the problem with this picture seems to be the forum software although a copy saved from the editor does display correctly suggesting there is also a problem with the original file despite two different pieces of software being able to get the orientation correct

On your post I can't click on any "right place" to display the second pic "upright".

Sure I could use my computer nous to get a picture in correct orientation, one way or the other but this is hardly the point. ALL pics on the forum should be displayed in correct orientation. With no effort from the viewer. If this is impossible sobeit. But I can not be bothered with any post which contains sideways pics. If this is a picture show rather than a genuine forum this is an issue that needs serious sorting out.

These have sideways photos and they are all shot portrait. All display correctly when you download the image in the browser. Do we get any landscape coming out sideways?

Two are Samsung phone, one an Ipad2 and one unknown.

It must be something to do with the forum software interacting with the images.

Like Tony said, we are getting the new forum soon, so we'll just have to see if it gets fixed then. Very doubtful if anything is going to be altered with this forum software if it is soon going to be discarded.

At the bottom of the pics. there is a 'download' bar, **
click on it and up will come (with a bit of luck :) ) an original ginormous size pic in all its original glory, if your internet is a bit slow it may take a few moments to arrive. If you are using Windows click again on this new image to get it all into your window, else use the scroll bars.

Such a big pic could be useful in diagnosing Cactusgirl's problem ? in the original post/question here :- viewtopic.php?f=1&t=168398#p279686

This problem may be solved by the long awaited new software but I seem to remember that the new platform will be Wordpress and a quick google search finds lost of problems with sideways pictures on Wordpress.

Edit

Just noticed amongst the results of my google search that there is a plugin available for Wordpress to solve this problem by saving a file with the required orientation based on exif data before the image is processed by Wordpress https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/fix-image-rotation/

The large, original files do have Exif data with the rotation set correctly, but the smaller versions are stripped of all Exif data. The small pictures have some additional text near the beginning of the file: "CREATOR: gd-jpeg", and I assume it means that the original file was automatically resized by PHP's GD library, which is known to remove Exif data. (PHP is the programming language that the forum software is written in).

I've just taken eight pictures with my digital bridge camera (Panasonic Lumix FZ-1000) in all four rotations. I've uploaded them direct to the forum from the PC without doing anything to them and at full size.

The ones taken vertically were displayed sideways when previewed, but downloaded correctly.

This has satisfied my mind it is something to do with the forum, and nothing to do with the user uploading the images, or the type of camera in use. The only thing an uploader can do is try and take photos in landscape only.

As has been mentioned before, we'll just have to put up with it a little longer and hope the new forum solves this problem.

Thanks Malcolm, now I remember I have done this before.

But it goes back to my point that viewers should NOT have to do this at all. If the forum software can correctly orientate the image through this method it should be able to do it in the original posting. I agree with Chris L this is a forum software problem. But until the new forum appears (I should live that long) any post which has sideways images will only generate a grump from me, if, as has been suggested, it is an issue easily resolved by the poster using landscape.

Alternatively, by the poster using software to save the portrait raw file in a format which has no problem. It is surely better for one poster to take a little trouble, rather than every person who wants to view the pic?

And backend of last year, after long time phbBB traumas over this, their plugin was being re-vamped. I've not looked recently but I expect they have it sorted by now and our Admin will have either or both softwares in-hand.
As TonyR said - patience, is the watchword and meanwhile we can accommodate I'm sure :)
