Busy Little Bee

Post by Chris L »

Spotted this bee in the greenhouse yesterday evening. Buzzing around from flower to flower. Tucking in to all the nectar in the flowers. Thankfully most genera don't cross polinate otherwise sowing the seeds I'd end up with Mammillcalycium and Rebuticarpus and maybe Thelophora.

The way it sat on the flower for a minute or so, seemingly catching it's breath, I would say it was very happy.

Don't know if it helped but I took some flash pictures and it seemed to attract it to the open door so it could escape.

Nice photos.
Evidence of a previous visit by a busy bee from this seedling masquerading as an offset

Looks like a buff-tailed worker but since you're up north it could be the more scarce broken-belted bumblebee. A lovely set of photos though. I guess no one told the bees they're not supposed to know what to do with a cactus.

I was lucky to be visited by a blaeberry bumblebee last year. It took a liking to the sedum furfuraceum.

Studying bumblebees that eat from flowers is amazingly soothing....

Does anyone else have a collection plagued by leaf cutter bees?
I don’t think they do harm, but the empty nest cases are a regular find for me when repotting.

I watched a hoverfly gorging on pollen on my Echinopsis plants late this afternoon
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

On hot days the greenhouse is always full of bees.
