A pterocactus flowering, doesn't happen very often for me but I am a bit prone to burning these, anyone else get this problem

Oh, TINA!! That is quite magnificent! I don't envy you the repotting job, however...

Re: puna clavaroides
And I thought mine P. clavarioides was doing well. Yours is just a bit bigger - by a factor of about 20 x ...
Yes, I do find Pterocactus stems can go manky - scorch, or just drying out. But as the plants have a big swollen root, maybe the plants tend to treat the top growth as deciduous anyway, if conditions get harsh.
I did have this Pterocactus in flower today - megliolii. (Sorry the flower's not in focus - the camera focused on the stems).

Re: puna clavaroides
That's a beast of a plant, Tina, what a cracker! I've never seen it flowering. Wonderful!
With Pteros I have made similar experiences, they are prone to scorching but more so simply drying off. Did you prune your plant, Ralph? For the first time I did take off the old growth in early spring on some of my plants, and for the first time they look fairly respectable. I feared that I might lose flowers, but all bounced back really well, and those that tend to flower seem to want to do so this year (bit early to tell for some of them, though).

I do not normally comment on images that have been posted just for our delectation, but that plant Tina is just simply amazing. I saw it last year while it was in its vegetative phase but that floral display is just outstanding.
The Alpine Garden Society has had an on-line competitive plant show where plants in images are judged against each other. Maybe that would be a possibility when our new web site is up and going and Tina's Maihueniopsis (Puna) would certainly be a contender.
