Mould/fungus on seed soil

Post by Echinocactus123 »

Hello, The soil with my precious lophophora seeds In it is dotted with a few traces of a white hair-like mould/fungus. I have sprayed it with water a few times and reduced the humidity but it keeps coming back. Is their any way to get rid of it that is not using fungicide because I really can't find it anywhere or when i do it says it will arrive in weeks. And if I did get rid of it would the seeds still germinate?

Thank you for any replies.

I have had this a couple of times. It did not harm my seeds nor seedlings. Moulds that live on dead matter often do no harm to living organisms.

I use Chinosol (1/2 an Asprin sized tablet in a bucket of water) when I spray my seedlings, and never get any issue with mould.

Ralph, do you mean the water you use to water your seedlings?

thank you everybody, are there some moulds and funguses that kill of seeds before germination?

I don't think there is much risk of seeds being damaged by moulds and funguses. Young seedlings are very much at risk though. In my experience, once you see white thread like mould appearing your seedlings are doomed but let's hope you are lucky. What I wouldn't do is spray with water when you have fungus or mould as that will encourage it as most moulds like a damp humid atmosphere.

Yes, I don't use the "baggy" method but instead spray my seedlings every day. That way I get to watch them grow, and can pot on individual pots as they get big enough (just did 15 pots today).
Chinosol prevents damping off very effectively, although it doesn't stop cyanobacteria eventually covering the pots. As long as the seedlings have got going first, that doesn't really matter.
