Opuntia basilaris

Post by Ali Baba »

It’s been a good year for flowering this year, despite hacking it back quite a bit last autumn, possibly because of last years hot summer, also I find it needs copious watering or the buds dry up (I am drenching the pot at least once a week now and the huge root system dries the pot out in a few days). 4 flowers open today and about 8 more buds left.

A beautiful flower, and also the plant itself is very pleasing to the eye too. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Mines in a nine inch pot and has consistently grown like topsy each time I have repotted it. If my greenhouse was big enough I would stick in a 24 inch pot and it wouldn’t look out of place. I have to prune it back each year to avoid repotting it now . Repotting isn’t for the faint hearted though, serious protective gear required 😳

I do give both full sun and no heat in winter which requires a long winter rest so one of those factors works for me.
