This morning I was shown a cactus which has spent its long life entirely outdoors in a garden in Oban, Argyll. It has no protection from the fairly high rainfall which we have here and although some of the early flower buds can be frosted, it flowers regularly and well. I've attached pictures of the plant and its flowers.
If anyone can identify it both I, to whom a plant was given, and the owner would be delighted!
Many thanks,
Maurice.

Re: Hardy cactus
It's an Echinopsis - possibly E. oxygona, but maybe another species. They are pretty tough plants, but it's amazing that it has survived out of doors in Oban!

Re: Hardy cactus
Hi Diane
Many thanks for such a quick identification! I've looked it up and it certainly seems to be Echinopsis oxygona. Brilliant - I'll pass that on to the owner! I've already potted mine up and will hope that it will grow and flower as well as its parent!
I see you live in Kingston - I'm from Hampton Hill, and Kingston of course was our nearest 'big town' and I still visit whenever I'm down!
Many thanks again,
All good wishes,
Maurice.
