Holiday snaps
I was in Cornwall last week and made a flying visit to St Michael's Mount. Whilst I was chasing my 5 year old up the cliff paths I managed to get a few snaps
One for Paul Spracklin; Puya alpestris I think
Nice Aeonium, hardy all year round here
Some kind of Mesemb taking over the cliff
The houseleeks grow very big in Cornwall - juster

Re: Holiday snaps
Interesting photos, thanks! I've been to St. Michael's Mount a good number of times as I grew up in the area and return regularly to visit family and friends. It's always a good place to visit and it's great to see the different plants growing outside; Aeoniums seem to do especially well.

I’ll certainly be going back for a longer visit, as you have been there you will appreciate what it was like with an overactive 5 year old who has no fear of heights

It's an amazing place - I've only visited once, but was so impressed with what is able to grow there!

Yes, you were certainly wise to chase after him! It's not the place for anyone who suffers from vertigo.

Re: Holiday snaps
A few years ago a new guy took over responsibility for the design and planting of the gardens there and he has used a small palette of plants repeated over and again - Aloe polyphylla, Agave montana, Agave ovatifolia in particular. He tried Nolina nelsonii but that couldn't tolerate the salt laden winds. Fab. Probably the best microclimate on mainland UK!

Re: Holiday snaps
I've been to Penzance branch to give talks, and stayed with Rob Senior. I was amazed at what grew outdoors in his garden. Lobivias, Aeoniums, and the top of his wall was covered with flowering bromeliads. Shocking!

Re: Holiday snaps
Ralph, I've known Rob for 20-odd years - such a nice man. A true pioneer - he was growing exotics no-one had even thought about, that being the reason he moved to Cornwall as a newly qualified GP back in the 60s. Sadly Rob nor his wife Dawn are very well these days - I visited him around a month ago. He has given away most of his collection as he just can't cope.
