But at what temperatures does root desiccation and damage occur in cultivation, often in shallow pans or pots? Especially for young plants?

All I'll add is that not every cactus, and certainly not every succulent, behaves the same way. That's fairly obvious between a Conophytum and an Echeveria, but equally true of a Notocactus and a Sclerocactus.

It take too long though to move 2,500+ plants.
If only I could just remove the roof of the greenhouse!
I've often wondered why greenhouses don't open at the apex (wind probably :???: ). It would be great just to be able to turn a ratchet handle that opens the sloping roof panels into a vertical position.

Do it when it is raining and the plants get watered really easily.

Tony, Scarisbrick Plant nurseries just down the road from me do have a Dutch made greenhouse that has an opening roof. the roof is basically a flat roof made of 3ft ( 90 cm ) sections that tilt upward to stand vertical, it is a unusual feeling the first time you walk into the greenhouse when he has the roof open and it is raining.

Thanks, Ray. That is very interesting. It would be good to capture a photo sometime.

Here you are Tony a photo taken from the road then one taken from in front of the greenhouse, and today we have the Irish soft rain so perfect for watering the garden or inside the greenhouse, when John throws a switch a pulley moves a couple of rods which are attached to the spars with the u shaped cranks that lift the roof vertical in pairs of sections to give a space between each of about six feet leaving only the u shaped aluminium gutter in place.
This greenhouse has been up for over thirty years, and is used as a sales house and shop area, all his other greenhouses have conventional roof systems of one type or another.
