Should a Gymnocalycium buenekeri flower from the side?
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

They usually flower on new areoles, but occasionally from old ones.

Most flower from the near the growing point, but there are several species that do flower from further away from the centre.

My G. buenekeri flowers from the centre. Yours obviously has a mind of its own.

Generally they flower from the areoles near the top, but some species flower from lower down. It is not unusual for them to put out the odd flower like yours is doing.

Yes this is also my experience, an occasional flower from the bottom of the plant. Seems like the plants don't read the books!

Thanks guys n gals. I got it late last year as an end of year disposal. Had lots of offsets from it. This is its first flower for me ..... and it looks like it has more pups at the soil line.
