Outside Opuntia Flower

Post by Chris L »

Last year I decided to grow some Opuntia outside. Two of them have put out flowerbuds recently and the picture below is the one most developed.

Kind of leaves a bit of dilemma now.

Do I leave it outside in the hope the flower opens on it's own so that I can say I've flowered an Opuntia outside, but risk it not opening properly (or at all)?

Or do I put it in the GH in the hope the extra shelter and warmth might encourage it to open - but then has it flowered outside? [my greenhouse has shading up BTW.]

What ever happens I am really pleased with it having a bud on like this. If it opens it will be a bonus.

I love optimism. But plan for the opposite also!
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Talking of heatwave or otherwise, after that very hot spell I decided to repot two plants which live outside, and put them in nice glazed pots and move them from down the garden outside the greenhouse door, to near the front door!
It has never stopped raining since, sorry guys.

And I thought it was due to the wrong seaweed at the Met Office

We bought a new garden hose some weeks ago, which is still unused, as it's hardly stopped raining since! Sorry!

I also grow carnivorous plants which absolutely NEED soft water, preferably rain water. So as I ran a bit short with last years long dry summer I upgraded to a bigger water butt.

I haven't had to use any of the water in it this year

Well the flower shown above never opened properly, but as mentioned there was another plant in bud. Didn't look anywhere near being ready to open this morning, but look what the sun and hot weather has done.

I got the plant years ago to do some pad grafting and never got round to it. Seems to have liked being in fresh compost and outside......
