i will give the grafting thing a go.I am a beginner so it will be interesting to try
had it out of the pot today and the roots look fine no damage there

I had a small seedling that was barrel shaped that got bitten my a slug over winter. I would say 50% of the top was lost (width wise) This Summer it started a growth off the remaining part. So maybe its worth trimming the dead bits out to encourage new growth? Worth a try.

Its worth remembering that Gymnos do offset, often quite profusely, so if you top slice it to get the graft, keep the rest going - I'd separate it from the rest of your collection - and hope it throws some offsets.
