Unknown Neoporteria\Eriosyce

Post by David_L »

Hi Everyone

This is a repost of an ID request for a "lost label" plant I picked up recently at Eau Brink nursery. I just rather liked the look of it. I posted it in the "napina" series earlier, but Suleyman tells me he had trouble in viewing it. I have reduced it in size a bit, hopefully he will be able to see it now.

hello David

with Florencia we think that maybe your plant is an Eriosyce napina ssp. aerocarpa Ferryman
... ribs dissolved into tubercles, areoles not sunken, wool covering steam apex, red-brown spines...

do you have pics of the flowers?

I have found "aerocarpas" in habitat, in 3 differents places East of Carrizal Bajo, and the 3 are differents forms:

fenotipo1, short and few spines, wooly areole, living in flat lands

fenotipo 2, spiny, small body, living betwen rocks in slopes

fenotipo 3, eastern, straight spines, very acicular

here you can find more photos in big size, for more details

your plant have a long central spine (!!)... not too long like this

HOW DEEP IS YOUR POTS?????????????????????

Hi David,
I couldn't realize this plant. Maybe it is in the curvispina group.

I think that curvispinas dont have wooly apex... I mean, I still dont find one :)

And... I was searching in my photos and I found what I think is Eriosyce napina ssp. glabrescens form "fulva", east of Totoral Bajo (north of Carrizal, 3? region)

Hi Spiniflores

Thank you for your interest & wonderful habitat photos. I think your identification could be correct. Some of your habitat photos look really a lot like my plant. Unfortunately it has not flowered yet for me. It was a bit neglected when I got it, with a few aborted flowers. It has cheered up a lot in some decent compost and hopefully will flower next year.

Great pictures Juan & florence, it's really interesting see how tough these plants really are & what extreme conditions they surive in habitat.
