UK 1st, USA 3rd, World 6th

What is it? Its the warmest year on record throughout much of Europe, but only the sixth warmest on average across the world. Not sure how reliable this is two weeks before the end of the year but given the current unseasonable warmth I don't think its going to change. Now will someone please turn the rain off!

Hi, All.

And possible sun storms as well.

Does a google search for Aurorawatch and be on alert for the Northern Light.

Trouble is there's so much cloud about that we'll probably miss any celestial displays! I usually miss the Leonids each year due to clouds!!

Hi, Maria J.

If you register with the Aurorawatch people you get an email alert of likely events,
It gives you more of a chance to see them.

That is what I got today. Also do a google search for the ESA space site.

I don't know whether there's any chance of seeing them as far south as I live. I can get to a clear hill with a good view of the north, but its only about 300ft above sea level.

Anyone know if its possible given a clear night and a decent show.

Hi, All. And Chris43.
If it is a big event you will be able to see them.

I've seen 3 possible 4 events. only one as a result of the Aurorawatch.

It is a green glow looking North rather than an orangey yellow from the street lights, that gives it away.

Also straight lines appear in the sky with colours of green and red.

Cor, so it's bright enough to catch with a camera!

My best friend lives in Finland and asked me to visit in winter so that I can see the lights. It's about -25 up there... and I don't have thick Northern blood full of antifreeze. I have traced my family tree a bit, and a lot of my maternal Grandad's side are from Yorkshire so if I do have any Viking blood in me it is very dilute!!

There is more Mediterranean in me.. 1/16 or 1/32.

I think I'll restrict my visits to the summer - even if the bugs like me too much. :)

We're pretty high up but are surrounded by sodium streetlights.. hopeless for astronomy unless you want to look at the zenith or less than 45 degrees from it. I think maybe not so good for the lights?

Although North is slightly less light-polluted..

Happy carrier of Forby Disorder - an obsession with Euphorbia obesa.

NB. Anyone failing to provide a sensible name for me to address them will be called, or referred to, as Fred.
