Seed sowing dilemma!

Post by David_L »

Hi Everyone

I'm jealous of all these people reporting they have seedlings up. I was creating an Excel spreadsheet of the seeds I've bought this year today and find to my horror I have 90 types!! Inspection of the propagators reveals that until it's warm and light enough to take some of last Autumn's seedlings out to the greenhouse I have just about room to sow 20. How to prioritise?!!

I had that dilemma too, David. I don't know whether I'll regret it or not, but I decided to let my seedlings gradually dry out, and also reduced the thermostat temperature over the Xmas period. Last weekend I took them out and transferred them in the open area of the greenhouse, thus letting me reuse the propagator space.
My thinking was that at least they had had several more months growing time, and if they now go dormant, I can wake them up in just a couple of months more, and maybe they won't be too far behind where they could have been.
I guess I'll see in due course...

I've got the same issues! although 50 seed types. The worse thing is the cacti are currently living in the greenhouse that is usually used for tomatoes etc. and bad weather is making slow progress at getting the new one put up! I'm actually really starting to panic that I'm going to have homeless cacti soon!

Hehe, my thought too... homeless tomatoes! :)

David, how about another propagator?

Everything I have sowed this year fits in my propagator with room to spare, although there is still one more specialist seed list to come. My problems will come later when I have to find permanent homes for them.

I'm waiting anyway to sow seeds - apart from a few winter growers - the days need to be longer and warmer for best germination under my conditions.

Yeah, what are you northern hemisphere guys doing sowing seed already :P I'm still sowing (albeit late) stuff down here !!

And David, I have the same problem as you...too much seed, not enough room....Grrrrr! (hence while I'm still sowing now..LOL)
