Habitat pics - Las Vegas

Post by Vladimir »

The pics are taken at the end of September 2005. It was a rainy day.

First - images from the hills around 13 mile campground.

Wet Opuntia basilaris

Echinocereus engelmanni - yellow form

Echinocactus polycephalius. Wet spines are bright red. Echinocacti grow at the hills, but never close to the cliffs where Ferocactus cylindraceus land is

Escobaria deserty - extrimly difficult plant in culture. They are somewhat rare at these hills. The rocks are limestown and pH soil test usualy shows here some numbers around 8.0

Cylindropuntia ramoissima - another difficult but pretty cholla. It usualy grows about a foot or two tall, forms low wooden tranks and long deep fleshy roots

And rainy day view - with two species of Yucca (brevifolia and likely mojavensis) and couple small Ferocactus plants

*****************************************************************
Now different location off of Blue Diamond road. All that is near Red Rocks park, about 30 minutes drive from Vegas Casinos.

The sight of Silver Chollas (Cylindropuntia echinocarpa) and limestown cliffs where Ferocacti grow

Pretty Cylindropuntia ramoissima with yellow-tiped thorns and a fruit

Ferocactus cylindraceus plants

Echinocerei engelmannii

And Ferocactus seedling with small echinocereus

And more wet plants of same sorts from that hill

Another Escobaria deserty - small pretty plant

Again - Echinocereus and Cylindropuntia ramoissima

See why I like them

*******************************************************
The last couple pictures - different lication, off HW 160, short drive uphill to the mountain pass. One side is dense with junipers, other hill has more open space and cacti.

This location has got plenty of Escobarias deserty - no looking for them needed here

Echinocereus engelmanni here has somewhat washed-out yellowish-white spines color, unusual

The Opuntia of unknown to me sort - I call it engelmannii

More plants of that kinds

.. and with Agave nevadensis

Nice photos Vladimir! Unusual to see the plants wet from rain, it really brings out the colour of the spines. Myself and Bob were up Blue Diamond Road last November, we visited Cactus Joe's and Red Rock.

Hi Dirk
Shure you can do this.

Hi Vik
The second set of pictures is from that hill where the mine is - may be a mile or so from Cactus Jack place. Not what he has a lot of cacti - but I bought one of those mexican ceramic lizards. Then from the intersection with 160 where the gas station is I turned right - away from Vegas and went uphill may be 5 miles or so - that is the last set with escobaria place

Gambling is always a waist of time, gambling in Vegas - double of that. The place is one of the best in the country for outdors activities - climbing, mountbiking, hiking, photography, cactus hunting :))

Tending more towards cacti :D, particularly Gymnocalyciums, Rebutias, Sulcorebutias, Echinopses, Thelos, Feros and Mamms (and anything else I like the look of!) all in an 8 x 6 polycarb greenhouse and a few windowsills!
