Hi Julie,
thank you for wishing my little plants well.
It's completely wrong to assume they all look alike even at this early stage. It could be useful to build a reference file for those who have planted a mixed packet of seeds and are trying to sort them out.

Hi Dirk,
caution! Making propagators can become a hobby in itself.:-)
Are you making aluminium seed trays?

No , it is .... some plates from a friend-cactophile who is a edittor????
and they are to do off-set printing something ???? I know nothing about it but it is good plieable stuff with mirror-efect and there are many things you can do with it. Putting de same genera together or the same seedsuplieer, he uses those things as tray to put his cactuspots in!!

Re: Raising seeds in a propogator
On germination I tried for some years to grow Gymno ferrarii. Nothing. Tried again last year - exactly the same method. 25 of them came up.

Hi ian
Slightly off topic but with our lizard tanks, obviously UV lights have to be inside but we also put the chunky black starter units in the vivariums too, assuming that it generates heat so it may aswell be inside where it's wanted not on the outside lost to the room.

Re: Raising seeds in a propogator
Tina, I think you can get UV-transparent perspex sheets now, not cheap though. I was talking to a lizard lady today as she was collecting laminated glass and I know that stuff doesn't pass any UV to speak of. Those black boxes, equvalent to the ballast on a fluorescent light, give out up to 10% of the total lighting power as heat.
Have you grown many Ian?
A grand total of none But all the people who grew mine for me say germination is horrible at room temperature, not too bad in a heated propagator, and just seems to get better the warmer you go. One study has shown germination was triggered by temperatures of 65C (for a few days), although the actual germination takes place at lower temperatures.
