Cactophile !!?

Post by Cactus Jack »

Are you a Cactophile ? This to me is a terrible name , does anybody eles think so? I cringe every time i hear or read it. Makes me think of dirty old men in potting sheds (this is my own personal opinion) I dont think its a word which in this day and age would attract anyone to the hobby . :/

I *totally* agree Stephen! I had the same reaction when I first saw it! I definitely prefer 'cactoholic' as used by Sandi and others!! ;)

Tending more towards cacti :D, particularly Gymnocalyciums, Rebutias, Sulcorebutias, Echinopses, Thelos, Feros and Mamms (and anything else I like the look of!) all in an 8 x 6 polycarb greenhouse and a few windowsills!

Personally I think it's ok and I'm not a dirty old man. Sometimes a dirty younger man when I've got my hands covered in compost etc.

Ahhh - a cactophilephobe and a cactiholicphile then is it? I think both are not a good reflection of what we see ourselves as - but currently can't think of a better alternative. give me time......enter thinking mode.

That would suit me fine, Phil, as I grow almost no "other succulents". But perhaps a more all encompassing word might be Xerophytologist?

Xerophytologist? Might be too broad :) Don't want all those hard-leaved Australian species, Tillandsias, and resurrection-type plants sneaking on to the show bench ;)

Well, the Greek for Other Succulents, is ????? ????????? which from a very basic greek alphabet on the web seem sto be something like "Allon Pachufuton". But I could be wrong.....

So we could have cactologists and allopachifutologists, even though it sounds like welcome to a portable Japanese bed.

Latin anyone?

Yup, you're right, I'm bored.....a bit too cold now to be in the greenhouse...
