A mix of seeds in plastic bags - I

Post by sechjoh »

This is the first time I try the plastic bag method and I am very exited :)

Yes, it's a very strange mix of seeds, I know.

I use a 50/50 mix of red lava and perlite as potting medium in 7X7cm pots, nuce them in the microwave for some minutes.

This is the seed list:
- Astrophytum asterias
- Cumulopuntia boliviana RH 1304a (Cachinal, 3800m, Arg)
- Stenocactus coptonogonus SB 13 (Salinas, SLP)
- Stenocactus phyllacanthus ´violaciflorus´ SB 112 (San Juan del Rio, Mex)
- Encephalocarpus strobiliformis (Pelecyphora)
- Glandulicactus uncinatus DJF 615 (Catorce, SLP, Mex)
- Rhipsalis baccifera Neuendorf 285 (Goth. bot. garden 87328) (Prov. Morona-Santiago, Limon, ca 1000 m, Ecuador)
- Strombocactus disciformis VB 15
- Strombocactus disciformis ssp. esperanzae
- Tephrocactus aoracanthus RH 2214a (Lomitas de Chicaguala, 1075m, Arg)
- Turbinicarpus alonsoi GM 24 (Xichu, Mex)
- Turbinicarpus bonatzii
- Turbinicarpus gracilis (Aramberri, Mex)
- Turbinicarpus longispinus BO 494
- Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus (Galeana, Mex)
- Turbinicarpus swobodae HO 16 (Rayones, Nuevo Leon, 1800m, Mex)
- Turbinicarpus valdezianus P 267

The first one to germinate was - well guess - the Astrophytum asterias :) 80% germination...

I think some Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus has germinated now, but it's hard to tell yet 8-)

Thank you.

Well, the weather here is dark and damp and it seems that the sun will be behind clouds for weeks, and rain is in the air :(

It's nice to have artificial light to grow under, and the days getting longer every day now :)

Good luck Christer. I did my first seedlings last year, there is nothing like watching them grow. :D

Thank you Julie!

I know the feeling, I watch the pots every day even if it's not my first time with seedlings :)

These ones are almost one year old, and I got one double headed - that's a bonus ;)

This method certainly works well Christer - not 100% but the seedlings have a much better chance this way. There is always a chance that something nasty will get in, perhaps on the seed itself or even inside it, but watering with a Chinosol solution can help. You'll enjoy watching them develop.

That's a good advice, but I don't know where to get Chinosol in Sweden 8-) I've been looking for antifungi for a long time, but nothing :(

Look for Thiram, probably sold under a different name where you are! It hasn't shown any inhibition of seed germination so far, and seems to do the job. I haven't used it, I don't spray my seedlings, but people who've used both prefer Thiram.
