Thanks for the great pictures guys !
haseltonianas and other names.
I use haseltoniana for the plants growing along most of the coast going north from Taltal,
With a small location of giganteas at about 25 16' South.
eremophila inland as ian said, but high up in the mountains above Paposo.
and finally tenebrosa, high and low in the region of San Ramon.
Although they are all good lumped as haseltoniana,
I still prefer to use all the names above, as they make good handles for differing populations.
And like i said before, a collector/grower of Copiapoas misses out on so much
if they have a check list of 'wants' and 'gots', based on a very short lumped list of species.
You can fill a greenhouse or two, entirely of different Copiapoas
Many of my haseltonianas even have just place names on the labels,
like Caleta Oliva and Santo Domingo.
The bumpy 'road' to El Cobre.
A must though for any traveller in the region,
as i hope you had time to stop at Botija

As David notes this was a really good spot and featured several different plants. It was about 1.5 hours north of Paposo which at the speed we were forced to do on the dirt road was probably in the region of 40 km.

And finally there was this succulent growing amongst the rocks. Not sure what it was but it was quite pretty. Shame I failed to get the flower stalk in focus.

Something must have found it tasty as the edges of the leaves appeared to be well nibbled.

Another view of the Eulychnia. I had it down as iquiquenis, but I think you are right, it's atacamensis.

What fabulous pictures, still. It looks like the bird life and plant life are equally good. I particularly liked the owls and raptors.
Judging by the shape and colour of the flowers and leaves, that last succulent looks like an Echeveria.

Obsessive Crassulaceae lover, especially Aeoniums but also grow, Aloes, Agaves, Haworthias and a select number of Cacti.

A couple of extra pictures of the Copiapoa cinerea forms at this site.

This very nice plump plant looks like what is sometimes called cinerea 'albispina'

This is a very attractive reddish spined form. I suppose you'd have to call this cinerea 'haseltoniana' as Benjy does.
