And a last look up towards the mountains before setting off for the last cactus stop for the day. Wonderful clours to the mountains in the background.
My study of the afrorementioned slightly dodgy 'Rough Guide' map was leading me to conclude that we would be very, very late getting to the Hotel....and I was running short of dried fruit and nuts to snack on......

Half an hour later (thats probably 10Km or less) we stopped again this time to see what I think is Copiapoa atacamensis....

Here they are dotted across the barren landscape. Note the lengthening shadows.....I think it was about 6:30 by this time.

The low sun picked them out very well and set the spines glowing with an amazing golden light.

And one that didn't make it......there were several of these dead ones dotted around and again they all looked as if they had been incinerated.

Hi Guys, I'm really enjoying your travelogue....
It's a bit hard to make out, but could that last plant be C. solaris rather than C.atacamensis ? As you move just north from Botija towards Antofagasta (and not very far at all) the spination of the C.solaris changes, it's weaker and it takes on a bit more of an orange hue and there are scattered individuals that are closer to the coast..
Be interested in hearing what others think....

Hi Trevor
I wondered about that and was hoping someone would clarify it. I must admit that by the end of this particular day I was less clear aout the divisions within Copiapoa than I was at the begining....

I'm casting my vote for solaris. I have the name of this place down as Blanco Encalada. The low light was really emphasizing the orangey spines of the plants. Seen from another angle they were greyer. This is my general view of the site.
