The next stop was at Quebrada Guatin. This was a very pretty spot and obviously visited by others too. A little stream, presumably fed by melt water from somewhere, ran through the lower part of it and this produced a thicket of Pampas grass. It looks right here; it has always looked out of place to me in a British garden. Most startling was the randomly placed outdoor toilet facility.::o

This is Pampas grass as it should be growing. You can see the little stream in this picture.

There were some very nice cacti here. On the hillside were a number of large Trichocerei. These were Trichocereus atacamensis. The steep hillside and loose rocks deterred me from getting any closer, but I think Mike scrambled up to them.

Closer at hand there were some nice clumps of Opuntia (Maihueniopsis) camachoi. Several were in flower and the subject of interest to the bees. This plant was covered in buds and would have been a spectacular sight a little later.

The clumps of this plant were substantial, some over a foot across; a very attractive sight.

Some variation in flower colour was noticeable. Some flowers had a more orangey tinge. I wondered if there could be some hybridisation with the red flowered Maihueniopsis atacamensis which was growing side by side.

This is the rather similar Maihueniopsis atacamensis. It also showed some variation in flower colour between an orangey red and a rose red.

This Maihueniopsis atacamensis has most attractive red flowers. As you can see these plants are really fiercely spined.
