We continued to gain altitude to around 3,200m and eventually arrived at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere.....a few tumbleweeds would have completed the scene nicely.
If I understood correctly Tito had used the local bus service to explore the area alighting here and then waiting however it long it took to get a bus back to Salta.

As you can see from the attire it was quite cold and windy here and we immediately set about looking for the four plants we were promised grew on this very desolate hillside.

Looking back the way we had just driven the clouds looked very much like a shower of rain was approaching.

The first plants I came across were some quite healthy looking Austrocylindropuntia verschafeldtii.

Followed rapidly by a Tunilla. I am not certain of this but Tunilla soehrensii was mentioned as a likely specific name for it. There were many large clumps spread across the hillside but I saw none in flower or bud.

Plant three was Cumulopuntia boliviana - showing signs of new growth suggesting that there had already been some spring rain in the area.

There were a few other miniatures at this site. Rebutia nigricans, which we had noted on rocks at the much lusher previous habitat, was also here in much drier conditions.

There was also a globular Lobivia pulled well down into the substrate. Obviously rain hadn't reached this location in any quantity yet, though the sky suggested it wasn't far off. I have this plant down as Lobivia haematantha v. kuenrichii.

The scenery and sky were very dramatic at this spot. Here is Mike on the hillside and the bus in the distance, and beyond more hills and a lowering sky.
