Cactus market and some c&s collections from Czech Republic

Post by sandi »

This weekend we were in Czech Republic where we visited the annual cactus market. We stayed there for two days. So we used the time to visit some privat collections.
First are some pictures from the market itself. I have never seen such a crowd. There was a line in front of the entrance. You could scarcely move from table to table. The sellers were selling almost everything a cactus enthusiast heart desired.

And some really nice Obregonias - I'm still sorry for not taking one. They were about 8-9cm and 24 euros each.

After the market we visited the man who started these market sales a few years ago. We visited Pavel Pavlícek's nursery.

David, it was crazy and sweaty. My T-shirt was soaked.
After Pavlicek's nursery we drove toward the Polish border to the town Hradecký, where we visited the brother's Duben. We had to wait for them for an hour because they were still at the market.

At the entrance to their greenhouses were nice specimen of Echinocactus grusonii. Their greenhouses cover 2000 square metres and they are full of cacti. :)

Next on our route (it was evening and was getting dark) was the collector
Ficher (Mediolobivia fischeri, Gymnocalycium fischeri), his collection is based mostly on South American species. The pictures were taken in very bad light. He has everything outside in kind of small greenhouses.

He also had a rock garden :)

After that we realised that we are hungry (I only ate one sandwich during the whole day, but drank some beer :D )
We went to get some dinner and then got to our hostel in Pardubice.

Next morning we visited another succulent collection.Svoboda's collection was quite nice althoug I'm not that much into succulents. But there were also some cacti.

Hi Sandi
Thanks for sharing these pictures
I am glad you put the pictures on from Duben-Kaktus as I bought a few Tephrocactus from Tomas at ELK they are like the ones in your picture
I tried to find there place on Google earth but couldnt find it as I would love to visit there nursery some time
Do you have anymore pictures from there?

The last collection before we went home was Libor Mejstrik's. Someone told me that he found one of the mammillarias. This collection was something extraordinary. Everything had its place and god forbid something would be out of place. It was just like in the army. Majority of the plants if not all had fild numbers. But let the photos speak. :)
