Bidding a sad farewell to the beautiful Opuntias we climbed back into the bus for a little more gentle driving through the very green and pleasant valley until around fourty minutes later we stopped beside the road. We were quite a distance above the valley floor here with pleasing views down to the river(Red).

Of course we quickly turned our backs to the river and made our way through the roadside shrubbery into the start of a dried up stream bed generously laced with large boulders and spikey shrubs. Still we were promised around eight species of cacti here all within a a couple of hundred yards of the road....we just had to scramble up the stream bed to find them...

A few yards in we encountered our first plant and what a stunner......
Trichocereus (Echinopsis) thelegonus. Not one that I would want to grow at home or even scramble through unforgiving bushes for again.

However when we cast our eyes around and found one in bud I was quite impressed.

Pity it wasn't open but it was still relativly early in the day.

Further up we began to encounter quite large numbers of this plant which I have no recorded name for.

It was nice to see some healthy looking Blossfeldias here. This one has tucked itself in nicely under a Bromeliad.

Now those plants that Mike wasn't sure about. Neither am I, but I dare say Alain or someone else will put us right. This is the plant in question. I have the suggestion of Echinopsis (Lobivia) chrysantha, though I'm open to other suggestions. Clearly an Echinopsis (Lobivia) of some sort.
