Colombia

Post by Thord »

Hello.
This summer I was in Colombia for two weeks and had gotten some advice about where to look for cacti from Forumites. It was a very nice trip and I got to see a lot of birds, but in the way of cacti it was a disappointment.I had planned to rent a car and go up in the mountains, but our hosts had made a very tight schedule for us and they would not let us out in the countryside,it was considered too dangerous. Cali was a nice enough city, clean and with very friendly people but there were military and police on every street corner armed with machineguns and every shop had its own armed guard. I got to visit a gardener up in the mountains who had quite a lot of cacti, but only the kind you find in garden centers here in Europe. The few that were at least a bit interesting were green with algae,it´s way too humid in this part of Colombia,so no buy but I got a few cuttings of some Tephrocacti and I found a really nice Mammillaria mystax in a vegetable shop. So,sorry but no pictures of plants in habitat and no Melocacti seed
Thord. All kinds of smallgrowing cacti.

Seems that best way to explore Columbian cacti in wild is to rent a tank, hopefully with skilled platoon as an escort :) Its a shame that some ineteresting (cacti wise) south american countries are so insecure.
