Longitude 110 - a project

Post by FlorentG »

Hello !

I hope this is the correct forum to post this... As it doesn't seem to be used to tell about travel plans, but rather to show travel pictures.

Well, I'm here to tell you about my next project, which partly involves xerophytic plants, but not only.

About the trip :
Next august I will be embarking on a one-year journey on bicycle with my girlfriend Marjolaine. We will be cycling from Anchorage (Alaska) to Chile.

About the projects :
This trip will be the opportunity for us to carry out an investigation on two topics : conservation genetics and ethnobotany, by gathering pictures and information with the contacts that we have along our way. We will hopefully publish the outcome of the study in diverse popular science magazines.

More about the conservation genetics project (as it is the one that will partly involve cacti and other succulents !) :

We will carry out an investigation on the ever-growing field of conservation biology. We will particularly focus on the significance of the phenomenon of inbreeding depression in some of the endangered animal and plant populations of the American continent. We will also try to find how such information is included in the draw-up of specific conservation action plans.
From a practical point of view, we will gather our information from the people we will meet along the way and who are contributing to conservation biology in their own way, be they scientists, individuals or officials. In order to have a wide variety of cases to report on, some of our contacts will facilitate our access to protected areas as well as to populations of organims of interest.
We have some contacts in California and in Baja California that will show us around and bring us to localities of endangered or monitored cacti and succulent species. We also hope to find succulent specialists and biologists further south (Central America, Chile, etc.) so that our report encompass a wide range of cacti and succulent species (and other plants as well, of course).

You can learn more on our projects on the website that we just designed :

Have a nice day,

Florent

I was wondering how you were going to 'top' all the wonderful trips you have already done, but it looks like you have come up with something!
It sounds like an amazing journey and I wish you every success.

Thanks to all of you for your messages.

I'm giving news on the project Longitude 110 as we are leaving for Alaska in just five weeks !

Our contact list is getting big, which is good news for the success of our two popular-science project on conservation biology (http://www.longitude110.com/conservatio ... diversity/) and ethnobotany. We found enthusiastic biologists working on In SITU or Ex-Situ conservation projects, be it on plants or animals. We did find researchers working on cacti & succulents conservation plans. (tu)

Finally, I wanted to tell you that we are launching a crowdfunding campaign in order to fund the last bit of our journey. (More information here : http://www.longitude110.com/support-lon ... ugh-ulule/)

Thus we are using ULULE to crowdfund Longitude 110. We tried to find interesting counterparties for our supporters.
If you are interested, you can visit our page on Ulule :

You can suscribe to our newletter (there is an application form on our website http://www.longitude110.com/about-longitude110/) or follow us on our facebook page (Longitude 110) !

Have a nice day !
