3 Habitats of Discocactus catingicola

Post by samoied »

Hello Folks

I'ts my first time sharing my habitat trips here and I hope you all like it.

I'll show you now 3 habitats of Discocactus catinguicola from the state of Goiás. I'm lucky that these wonderful plants are just 50 km away from my home in Brasília, in the city of Formosa.

I'm guessing these plants are D. catinguicola based in Marlon's very good paper about the Discocactii of Bahia. The taxonomy of the Discocactii of Goiás state is for me too chaotic to understand taken Buining and Esteves's references  .

Well let's get started then!

The first population is located in the summit of a hill that overlooks a big water stream, full of nice watefalls. The plants are in a mix of sandy soil and arenite rocks, always protecetd by the shadows of the nearby cerrado trees and bushes, being never exposed to the full sun. These plants are about 1.100 meters ASL.

Very nice plants. This population was healthy, there were a lot of young plants along the elder ones with cephalium.

As well as very young seedlings:

Some of the plants were quite big:

One thing that always bugs me about this species is that in the same population we can find plants with 2 different cephalium shapes.

One is this short, bristly and with a dark color.

Image

The other is this bigger, woolly and lighter colored type, that resembles the typical D. placentiformis cephalium.

Since you can find very old plants with both types growing side by side I don't think we can just attribute this diference to the diferent ages of the plants.

There were nearby some nice plants from the other families too:

Some nice leguminosae

Downwards, near the water stream:

Epidendrum secundum - Orchidaceae

Cyrtopodium palludicolum - Orchidaceae

Image

Drosera communis - a sundew.

Image

Drosera grantsauii - another sundew

Image

Utricularia nana - a carnivorous bladderworth

Image

Genlisea repens - another carnivorous.

That it for now. I'll keep posting the 2 other populations later.

Cheers

Adilson - Brasília - Brazil.

That's wonderful to see. I'm surprised that the plants are typically so clean - no bit marks, brown bits. (tu)
