Living far away from UK makes it almost impssible to attend any show, but for my better understanding: what is the 'difference' between Award of Merit and Diploma?

There is a document in the member's area of the bcss site which includes....

BCSS NATIONAL DIPLOMA The National Diploma is a major award at Branch and Zone Shows. It is to be awarded for the best Cactus and/or Best Other Succulent......

BCSS AWARD OF MERIT CERTIFICATE These certificates... may be purchased for award to outstanding exhibits in the show which do not otherwise qualify for major awards.

Yes, many of the shows, certainly in the South-east, have diplomas for Best Cactus and for Best Other Succulent and then up to 5 Awards of Merit (at the Judge's discretion).
