Hi Stephania,
That's a real shame about the whale! The 2nd photo really makes you appreciate just how large these animals are.

Hi Julie,
Yes there must be your favourite Obesa in that Bot. Garden, also in the plant shop too.
That's right, and sometimes you never known, Who's spotting Who ?
That 'Big Five' can come to very close, you can hear their breath!
I realize these powerful animal could be dangerous,
but one of the most you have to be very careful with them is the Hippo !

Re: My trip in the land of Aloe : some more pic
While I was at Cape Town, I took a cable car up to Table Mountain.
Up there was really cold, but I found this nice specimen of Aloe in the cloud.
And when I visit the Cape of Good Hope, I found this succulent plant along the hill to the view point,
I had no idea what it was, but may be in Aizoaceae family, I guess.

'Tis a great pity about the whale.
I just hope that if I ever make it to South Africa, 'Lady Luck' is with me! ;-)

Wow
Hi Stephania
what fantatstic plant pictures, the ALoe plicatillis is wonderful.
It does make me wonder if I'm being cruel trying to keep some of the more temp sensitive plants, as you get more casualties but then you mention you sometimes can't keep cooler habitat plants.
It's a good challenge I suppose
Thanks for the photo's

Hello Stephania,
I know the drier areas of South Afrcia well and your photos have brought back many pleasant memories.
The bookshop at Kirstenbosch is aimed at international visitors, so the prices are also international! Books printed in SA are good value and foreign visitors can claim back VAT. Also, if you subscribe to BotSoc's Veld & Flora magazine - good for the latest SA conservation news - you get a 10% discount. These discounts pay for postage costs home, so that you do not have to carry books around.
That's a Haemanthus bulb on the hill near The Palace Hotel in Sun City, probably H. humils, possibly H. montanus, from Dee Snijman's book. That's Aloe arborescens on Table Mountain, but I have no idea about your succulent ropes near the Cape of Good Hope, probably a clump of another bulb.
Best wishes,
Derek Tribble,
London, UK
