Hi Colin,
good news about the IOS - nice photos as well - did you know that (as far as I am aware anyway) Strelitzia is the only plant that is pollinated by birds feet as its usual method of pollination?
Best regards
Chris

Re: IOS at Kew - Aeonium undulatum
Hi Chris,
Nope, I didn't know about the pollination syndrome of Strelitzia - fascinating. If my plant EVER flowers in the study, I'd better leave the patio windows open if I want some fruit. ;);)

Sounds like I better encourage those pesky doves. My Strelitzia is just coming into flower in the GH.

Re: IOS at Kew
Great photos Colin thanks for sharing. Kew is one of my most favourite places and I would love to go behind the scenes one day (or work there - who knows!). At least when I visited in March I remembered to visit the Princess of Wales Conservatory as I ran out of time last year (distracted by a fruiting mulberry tree ) and almost got locked in.
I also have a Strelitzia reginae that I am tending in the hope of flowers one day, grew it from seed five years a go.

Bypassed the cacti, shame on you.
You should at least have looked at the incredible Melocactus collection.

Hi Victoria & David,
Great to know that others have a soft spot for Strelitzia too. Let's make this an honorary xerophyte.

Hi Colin,
It is in the same area you went in just between the rest of the spines and the cabbage patch

Re: IOS at Kew
I used to have the giant or white Bird of Paradise Strelitzia nicolai, when I say used to I mean I had it one summer, big plant over 7ft with 2 trunks and huge paddle like leaves but unfortunately it succumbed to it's first winter as I hadn't given it enough protection.

It is possible that a number of members do not know about the history and activities of the IOS you can learn more about it from their website at www.iosweb.org which has been recently updated and is sponsored by the Cactus and Succulent Plant Mall.
