Massonia pustulata

Post by Colin Walker »

In the other alpine house we found lots of interest. This is Massonia pustulata, a small S. African bulb. The genus, although not this sp., is included in The Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants, so for me this is allowed and is certainly a senocot.

This was just coming into growth - leaves up to 10 cm long and very "warty".

Massonia is a genus of around 12 spp. in the family Hyacinthaceae. Named after Francis Masson, who was Kew's first official plant collector at the end of the 18th century. He brought back hundred of new species from S. Africa and in 1796/7 published a monograph of stapeliads (Stapeliae Novae) including 41 superb colour plates, mainly based on his own paintings done in the field.

Whiteheadia bifolia

Post by Colin Walker »

Whiteheadia bifolia, another bulbous genus in the Hyacinthaceae with just 2 spp. Again in the IHOSP, so for me a true succulent senocot.

bonsai

Post by Colin Walker »

As Tina said yesterday, her favourite bit of Wisley was the bonsai garden, so here she is with some of them.

Identification

Post by Tina »

Hi all

Just trying to ID people.

For info Maria is the lady with the wolf t-shirt, on her right is Lindsey 'lithops'lady.
Now Colin & I are nosey so who is the couple on the left of Maria ??.

At the back from the right is 'moi', Bill ( blue t-shirt, Chris 43 , then the back of Phil (corrected) & David L.

Under the exit sign is Derek in a blue shirt talking to Ian in a white t-shirt.

Anyone else want to own up ??

Re: Identification 2

Post by Colin Walker »

Hi Guys,

Another pic taken at the lecture - the other half of the hall. Sorry the projector stand got in the way!

We've got Andrew Ross (NZCactus) on the back left with his wife, and Bill's (Super MOd) wife and daughters next row in from the back.

Any other IDs? Anyone know the three folk on the front row? Harrow Branch members perhaps?

Thanks for the pics Colin! Now that's what you call a greenhouse or glasshouse. The attenuata look good planted at different levels as if in habitat. What's the creeping green stuff growing around them?
