*** Special Lecture in NW London in Sept: Priscilla Burgoyne

Post by Apicra »

Harrow Branch BCSS is hosting a special speaker on Friday evening 9th September, in place of the advertised speaker, to take advantage of a visitor to Kew.

Priscilla Burgoyne from Pretoria, South Africa, is a SANBI botanist specialising in succulent plants and presented talks here in 2000 & 2002. She was one of the authors of the best-selling book "Mesembs of the World". Her talk is titled "Revelations from South Africa: Too many Mesembs ... too little time". There are currently no other plans for Priscilla to speak during this visit. Do not miss this opportunity to hear about South African succulents from someone who lives there!

The meeting will be at their usual venue in St. Anselm’s Church Hall, Uppingham Avenue, Stanmore,
Middlesex, HA7 2HU, entrance at the SE corner of the site, 7:30 for 8:00 p.m. There are no tickets, just pay the usual £2 admission incl. tea etc. on the door. For more information, see the branch web site: http://www.mycacti.info/ or contact myself. While there are few services in the immediate area, there is a cafe in the Morrison’s superstore in Hatch End on the A410.

I hope everyone will not be away at ELK!

Best wishes,
Derek Tribble,
Branch Chairman

Just a reminder for this unique oppportunity to hear Priscilla Burgoyne speaking about Mesembs and South Africa. She is in the UK now at the Kew Herbarium, so everything is in place for a special evening on this Friday.

Best wishes,
Derek Tribble,
Harrow Branch Chairman

Thank you to everyone for making Friday evening memorable. Despite ELK, I was pleased that we had a full room to hear Priscilla give a grand tour of the succulents around each biome of South Africa. We enjoyed excellent landscape photos, shrubby Mesemb pictures with correct identifications and lots of comments about the environment of our favourite plants. Very professional! There are photos from the meeting already on our branch web site, so you can play spot-the-visitor (thanks Alena)!
