ZONE 6 CONVENTION, N London, Sat 14th Oct 2017

Post by Apicra »

At Capel Manor College Gardens, we have a great venue booked, with great speakers and great sales!

The next Zone 6 Convention will be held on Sat 14th October 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Capel Manor College Gardens http://www.capelmanorgardens.co.uk/ , Bullsmore Lane, Enfield, EN1 4RQ in north London. The venue is close to the M25/A10 junction J25 (also home for recent BCSS Zone 15 conventions).

Ernst van Jaarsveld (South Africa) will present two talks: “Succulents of Southern Africa” & “Expeditions from Cape Agulhas to Angola”. He has been awarded the Veitch Memorial Medal by the RHS and is described as “a legend” in South Africa for his lifetime’s work with succulents including numerous publications and new discoveries. (Ernst's presentations will be different to those for the Haworthia Society’s Convention on the following weekend http://www.haworthia.org/wordpress/).

In-between, Ian Woolnough (Exeter), who has not spoken in the London area before, will present “Some Mexican Highlights”. Ian has visited cactus habitats in N&S America many times including a trip to Mexico this spring.

We also have our first choice nurserymen: Doug Sizmur and Terry Smale, plus Keith Larkin for books and Harrow Branch members’ sales. As usual, there will be a raffle.

Tickets include a substantial buffet lunch, plus morning & afternoon tea/ coffee/ biscuits. The price is £15 in advance from Zone 6 Branch Secretaries, or from Chris Backhouse, 50 Cecil Crescent, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, AL10 0HG, kaktuskris123@gmail.com . (Please make cheques payable to C. Backhouse and enclose your email address if available). The last date for buying tickets is Sunday October 8th (no admission on door). Tickets also include entrance to the extensive model gardens around the college, open daily 10am – 5.30pm.

The previous Zone 6 Convention at Capel Manor was well received: see the BCSS Forum report viewtopic.php?f=52&t=156402.

Best wishes,
Derek Tribble,
Harrow Branch

Tickets have sold well for this event. But attendees should note that the College is holding an Open Day at the same time to showcase their courses to prospective students. Our lectures have been moved into the Floristry Barn, also near the main garden visitors' entrance, which will be signposted.

The car park and gardens are likely to be busier than normal in Oct, but there will be room for everyone.

Wasn't that a lovely display of Ariocarpus flowers that Ian Woolnough treated us to in the latest CactusWorld?

Further to the above, I have now visited the Floristry Barn and it is a better venue for our convention - there is lots of space for our activities. The only shortcoming is that toilets are a short walk away - in the restaurant or the main visitors entrance.

Note that BCSS visitors for this convention will be directed to walk around the back of the public visitors' reception, to save us going through the garden entrance barrier. Please keep your tickets with you throughout the day to identify who you are when in the gardens.

Sold out (x74)! Please do not come if you do not have a ticket. Nice to have a party coming from Norwich.

I see Keith Larkin will have the new book for sale titled "Field Guide to Succulents in Southern Africa" by
Smith, Crouch & Figueiredo. Our CactusWorld editor recommends it - at 464 pages, it is very good value for money. http://keithsplantbooks.co.uk/details.a ... =C&id=9630

More news! Tony & Suzanne Mace will be bringing a small BCSS sales stand offering the new 2018 BCSS Calendar, BCSS labels, the latest Bradleya and Info Packs (mainly for any secretaries attending). I expect other items could be brought if you are quick to order: http://www.society.bcss.org.uk/index.php/books.html
