The BCSS is very excited to formally launch its major promotional event for 2019. CactusWorld Live – a succulent adventure will take place over the weekend of 21-22 September at Lullingstone Castle in the picturesque village of Eynsford, Kent, five minutes from Junction 3 of the M25 . We are particularly delighted to be hosted by Society patron and heir to the Lullingstone estate Tom Hart Dyke, who is hugely enthusiastic about the prospect of holding a big cactus and succulent event in the grounds. Tom will be present all weekend and will be giving guided tours of the renowned World Garden of Plants in his own inimitable style and sharing anecdotes from his colourful life.

Tom will be joined by other luminaries from the plant world, including broadcaster and fellow patron Ann Swithinbank and houseplant writer and blogger Jane Perrone, who will be podcasting her popular On the Ledge show from the event. There will also be talks, demonstrations, workshops and surgeries, aimed at all levels of interest, by experts and experienced growers from within the BCSS.

Designed to appeal to both existing growers and promote our type of plants and, of course, the Society to the wider public, CactusWorld Live will have at its heart a massive marquee featuring a full show of 40 classes together with sales from many of our top nurseries and booksellers. These will be complemented by displays and exhibits highlighting various aspects and applications of succulent plants. For the younger members of the family, there will be a junior event including free face-painting, balloon-bending and various prize competitions, while for local branches there will be space for promotion, fund-raising and members’ plant sales.

The event has been timed to avoid and extend the main branch show season but also to coincide with Lullingstone’s annual Mexican Celebration Weekend, a fun couple of days in which the estate highlights the Mexican plants in its gardens, including many cacti and succulents. There will also be stunning displays of dahlias, outlets providing Mexican food, tours of the castle and even a mariachi band!

CactusWorld Live is a major BCSS initiative drawing on the name of our best known brand, ie that of our excellent and highly respected journal, and is being centrally funded by the Board of Trustees in order to promote the Society and its branches without draining local funds. It is hoped that the weekend will be a big success and become a template for other events, perhaps in different parts of the country, in the coming years.

Entry will be £5 for BCSS members and for their accompanying partner, free for children under 15 (and those helping with running the event). Standard admission will be £10.

The Society wishes to acknowledge the following for their contributions to the event: Stirling Baker, Alan Bromley, Mick Cotter, Sheila Cude, Graham Evans, Eddy Harris, David Kirkbright, Suzanne Mace, Mike Partridge, John Pilbeam, Alain Sutton, Hazel Taylor, Ian Thwaites, Fiona Wemyss, Dan Wright and members of Zones 12, 14 and 15; and to extend its grateful thanks to Tom Hart Dyke.

So it's not a joke, that useless green blob really is the new BCSS logo. Bet the t-shirts sell well!
