Rejoining after 25+ years

Post by gerald »

Hello fellow cactologists, cacticians and cactophiles.

I had quite a collection when I was young, and regularly attended meetings at the Teesside branch of the society. I was mostly interested in Notocactus and was very proud of my lovely leninghausii, but leaving home to study biology at university meant that I had to leave them all at home for my mum to look after. So for the past 25 YEARS I have had no sunny windowsill nor greenhouse in all that time - UNTIL NOW! Now we have finally moved from London to South Oxfordshire, I can finally have a greenhouse and build up the kind of collection that my mum, despite her efforts, lost over the years.

So at the moment I have ZERO cacti (apart from an indestructible Copiapoa that my father in law has been keeping for me). The plan, once we have settled, is to set up a lean-to greenhouse in the garden early next year, then buy some plants and sow some seed. There won't be a great deal of space so I will be looking mostly at Rebutia, Mammillaria etc. Of course I'll be visiting the Oxford branch, and probably the High Wycombe one too, and looking forward to becoming active again.

Great stuff Gerald! Up the A1 you go, to Southfield nursery. Take a wad of cash and whatever size of greenhouse you're contemplating, double it and it still won't be large enough.

Thank you all for the welcome notes. Peter do I take it you're the proprietor of Southfield?!?! Unless my memory is faulty I am sure I bought some plants from there back in the early '80s! And probably for pennies rather than pounds!

Hi Gerald, welcome back to you as well. I have rejoined recently - I should be on here somewhere! No greenhouse but do have coldframe outside, where I placed my few plants over summer but the slugs decided to eat my Lithops - well the tops anyway - could they still grow from below the soil do you think? Good luck with building you collection. Sue
