New northern grower

Post by Monsieur Benoit »

Hello everyone,

My name is Benoit
I finally decided to register on this forum after lurking for a few months. I am located in Canada and I am growing all my cacti from seeds. After having bad luck with scales from plants bought in big brand store and getting more information, I started growing them. Most of my collection is quite new after loosing most of my specimen thanks to scales and poor cultivation in big brand stores, the plants were proning to rot easily or being easily attacked by pests. With several years of experimentation, I finally obtain quite a success with blooming cactus and growing harder types of cacti. Canada climate isn't the best to grow cactus especialy in the eastern part where it's humid in Summer and relatively short summer. Though, I am having quite a success with growing these. I hope it's not to badly written, french is my native language. Finding high quality cactus in Canada and especially in Quebec is quite hard. We have to import most of our plant. I prefer cactus, but I am showing lot of interest in caudex plant like Adenium (pure breed) and Pachypodium. Recently, I discover the joy of asclepiad like Whitesloanea, Pseudolithos.

So far I have tried several seed suppliers like Succseed, The Botanical Archive (Ebay vendor), Aymeric de Barmon.

Welcome. Are those the seeds you have sown recently, or is it your whole collection?

Also an addition of 40 packages from a czech seeds supplier will be add to the list. I have no clue about what species I will received, they are described as Chile Type. I am quite excited.

I have ordered from an australian ebayer these, I hope that those seeds are fresh. I sadly had bad experience with pachypodium sp. in the past due to freshness. After a little inquiry, I found out that Pachypodium brevycalix is just a variety of densiflorum which is kind sad:
Adenium somalense
Pachypodium brevicaule
Pachypodium brevycalix
Pachypodium densiflorum
Pachypodium eburneum
Pachypodium meridionale

I am really looking foward to add those species to my collection, I might add many more species if I order from Mesa Garden especially with the cactus type.
Ariocarpus bravoanus
Aztekium hintonii LH442
Astrophytum caput-medusae
Copiapoa solaris PV1263
Mammillaria nejapensis SB1608

Adenium arabicum
Adenium multiflorum
Adenium obesum
Pachypodium baronii
Pachypodium rosulatum
Pachypodium saundersii
Euphorbia obesa
Euphorbia symmetrica
Pseudolithos mccoyi
Whitesloanea crassa

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome

Are you new to growing plans yourself?
You sure picked out a few tough plants to cultivate, looking at the above list.
Don't get discouraged when things don't go as well as you'd hoped!

I am not new at growing plants, even for my young age of 24, I have acquired a lot of experience in growing cacti and I have been cultivating them for many years already. I just had a bad luck with scales, I would say that I have more than 6 years of experience at raising and growing them.

I wonder who haven't had bad experience with scales or root mealy bugs? Part of growing cactus is learning how to deal with all the pests there are. Even with grasshoppers, if they can they would eat half a small cactus in a night!

Benoit, you're going to have your hands full for quite a while raising all those seeds. Keep us updated on how are they doing.
