Another newbie :)

Post by makleodss »

Hello I am Karlis
I am new to this society and pretty new to collecting cacti.
Originally I am from Latvia where I had some collection of 30 cacti on windowsill but unfortunately by moving to UK (Ossett) I lost them all (some are still well cared elsewhere). Now when I an finally established in UK I start my collection from scratch. I have about 30 mature plants from specialised nurseries and some unnamed from garden centres. I get my beginners seed pack from BCSS after I have seen how they sprout out feel very confident that I want to grow all my cacti from seed in future. I already have some Ferocactus and Ariocarpus seeds sown 4 weeks ago. I keep those seedlings in cubbard size room under LED lights and only concern was temperature. I got about 30 of 40 species germinated in 18-19 degrees of celsium. Now I increased temperature up to 24c and hope rest will germinate.

Welcome to the forum, Karlis. You seem to be succeeding with your plan to grow from seed. Some cactus & succulent seed needs to have a variation in temperature before it will germinate; for example try dropping the temperature to around 15 degrees celsius at night for a few nights.
