Mam Z double flower
Hi everyone. I was a member during the late 1980s but had to give up growing spiky plants as it did not mix with having three kids. Still. I have kept my BCCS pin-badge. Anyway, started growing again and found something odd. My Mammillaria zeilmanniana usually flowers two out of three years I find. It is now about 14cm tall and loves to bend towards the light. However, this year it flowered in early January and has had a second flush of flowers in February. Has anyone else seen this? I live in South Wales and the Winter months have been quite mild so far.

Hi Emil, welcome back! It is many years since I had M. zeilmanniana, so I am not sure when it normally flowers. January sounds quite early, but it has been mild, although rather dull, at least in this area. Enjoy your plants.

Re: Mam Z double flower
I no longer have M. zeilmanniana but it was always a spring/summer flowering plant for me; not particularly early and not especially prolific. Yours may have got out of kilter with the mild weather in December or you might be lucky and have a plant that is especially prolific.

Thanks Rodsmith and Juster. Yes I think Early January was quite early - and it is still in flower today (10/03/16) - good grief! I'll see if I can post a picture.

Hi Emil, I cannot access your photo as I don't use Facebook, however, your plant has done really well to flower for so long in the winter. I cannot see buds on any of my cacti, although a number of succulents have flowered. Let's hope that Spring will soon be here.
