Hello from the mainland...

Post by claytablet »

Hello everyone,

I'm de-lurking after a while of studying this forum, you seem to be quite alright ;-)
I have just recently rekindled my love of spiny, prickly things and with a balcony all of my own I can (hopefully) offer them a better habitat than the window sill. Unfortunately, I live on the other side of the Channel so I can't join a branch  Or is there a branch for international members?? A virtual branch?? But I very much enjoy the CactusWorld journal!

My collection consists of various cacti but no more than about 60-70 at the moment. A very small collection. I have a large batch / troop / legion of Echinopsis hybrids rescued from a greenhouse clear-out. They might not be the prettiest but they have their charme. The others are a mixed bunch, there are some Rebutia, Sulcorebutia, one Mammillaria (no idea why there is just the one, poor lonely thing), Escobaria, Echinocereus, a Tephrocactus geometricus (he's not lonely, he's the darling of my fellow PhD students), and several that have yet to be identified. Perhaps I shall specialise in one kind, but don't count on it.
I am slowly swapping, buying, and rescuing others. Slowly, because I have to build shelving to hold them... There is also a Stapelia variegata or Orbea variegata (what is the correct name nowadays??) that got thrown out because it smelt. It was huge. Anybody want rooted pieces? Message me in mid-October, I'm in California until the 11th.

Aside from liking the Prickly Things, I am a PhD student in my last year working in the field of Assyriology and living in Germany... with lots and lots of the Prickly Things :)

I'm happy to be part of this engaging, welcoming, and knowledgeable community and hope I will be able to contribute in the coming years.

All the best!

Welcome to the Forum Jessica, it sounds as though you have built up a nice collection, your balcony must be quite crowded! I'm sure you will find plenty to interest you here. Enjoy your plants!

Hi Jessica, welcome to the forum. You are not alone on 'the main land' :) the forum has a fair number of continental members and long may it continue to do so.
I like your idea of a virtual branch, despite living only five miles or so from my local branch I never get to any meeting due to work and other commitments, can I join cyberspace branch.
Regards Keith.
