Hello There....

Post by Rich45s »

I'm Rich from London,

First time poster, long time reader - well not massively long time but slowly getting into hobby and thus reading lots and rapidly running out of surface space to put things as I feel bad chucking cuttings away!

Mainly here for Crassula information and the odd cactus bit. Slowly started getting into bonsai, then realised that they needed far more time that I can afford to give at present so realised the sheer bloody minded growing ability of the more 'sculptural' 'trunky' crassulas would be a more gentle introduction.

Based currently in SW London so off to Kingston society meeting sometime fairly soon in April for talk by Derek Tribble, mainly due to fact he supplied lot of pics for the book on crassulas that I nearly had a heart attack with due to seeing price of 2nd hand copies. If anyone's going to it, Feel free to say hello. I'll be the one frantically looking up strange plant related words that I only very vaguely know the meaning off and looking out of my depth!

Be well, and thanks in advance for any advice given to any of my other posts.

Cheers,

R

Hi Rich,

Welcome to the Forum!
I'm sure you will be made welcome at the Kingston meetings, they are a small but friendly bunch.
Derek should show you some fine crassulas in the Northern Cape along with many mesembs and fantastic scenery.
If you 'survive' until July, I am talking at the branch too, on some of my travels in SA.

Welcome to the Forum Rich. Derek gave his Crassula talk at Croydon branch last year and I can confirm that it's excellent, as is Tony's talk on S. Africa. I'm sure both of them will bring plants to sell, an added bonus of attending branch meetings. Enjoy your plants.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I'm sure there's enough info on any questions I may have already in the forum, so I might keep schtum for a while and just search through.

Looking forward to the April talk, so provided info doesn't overwhelm me, I may well see you in July too. I had hoped to have moved to the countryside by then, but I've been saying that for months!

The idea of all the good / rare bits being sold at the meetings is also a strong draw I must admit.

Cheers

Hi Rich - welcome to the forum! I am a Kingston branch member, and you will be given a warm welcome from our little band. Derek's talks are always something to look forward to - I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and I usually bring a few sales plants - you might find something to tempt you.

Hi, Rich

Derek is a great source of information on Crassulas. The Gordon Rowley book prices on eBay/Amazon are silly; I doubt they actually sell much at those figures. Keep an eye on Keith’s Plant Books, you'll get the occasional one there at much more reasonable price; alternatively, watch the For Sale section on the forum, various books are offered there.

For Crassula photos, Chris Rodgerson’s forum post has a link to his website with many habitat Crassula photos.

Hi Guys & Gals,

Again, thanks for welcome.

Diane, touch wood I'll see you Thursday. I'm not sure whether the bank holiday will increase / decrease attendance.

Thanks for book website resource Mike, that's going to be a great help. I agree people are just throwing a number out to see if it sticks with old books (& records!) sometimes. Problem is it lifts the ceiling price if someone casually googles a book to sell when these silly priced links pop up.

Again, thanks for links. Going to peruse now.

Cheers,

Gosh.

Can not believe it’s been a year since I posted this thread and then never turned up to the Kingston meetings! My health took a turn and I’ve been managing that, amongst trying to move and starting self employment so it’s all been a little hectic. Still not moved, but upcoming meetings may not be quite up my street.

Hope everyone is still well though, and if after a bit of research the Kingston meets fit I may turn up soon. I’ve just been emailed a fungus identification wander around Bushy Park for October, which granted isn’t cactus of succulent related but sounds interesting if I’m still in London by then
