Hello From Manchester.

Post by JohnW »

Hi,

I joined the society recently hoping to learn more about growing cacti and succulents. It was through keeping a few cacti that I became interested in gardening in general. In the 1970's I worked as a postman at Newton Street Post Office, Manchester. After my shift, I would often visit a small nursery on Swan Street called The Cactus House and that is where I made my first purchases. Sadly, the nursery is no longer there.

I still have a small collection which are housed in both a conservatory and a 6' x 4' cold frame. I have actually managed to over winter some of the cacti in the cold frame. However, I have also lost a few in the same way. I have two cacti in flower at the moment, they both over wintered successfully in my cold frame.

I eventually, I am hoping to attend at a local meeting of the society.

Welcome John.
I remember Newton St Post Office from my days as a student in Manchester in the late 60s!
I live in Leeds but have been to the Manchester branch a couple of times recently. They are a knowledgeable and friendly welcoming group.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Welcome aboard John,
I am also new here, to this friendly informative group, but a longtime more-or-less keeper of cacti.

Gosh, it was all happening in Manchester back then ! I was also there in the 60s,
- I dont remember * Newton St PO, was it anywhere near BBC Piccadilly ? where I was sound engineering for my good friend John Barbirolli, and the Hallé Orchestra.

howzat for a name-drop :)

* it has been said that if one can remember the 60s one was not really there :)

My word MalcolmP2 that is some name drop. Newton Street ran between Piccadilly and Great Ancoats Street where the Daily Express was printed back in the day. As for the 1960's, they completely passed me by.
