January 2014 - A Splash of Winter Colour

Post by CactusFanDan »

It can be a bit drab and dull in Winter at times, particularly with the short days and long nights. So, let's see what colours your plants are showing about now to brighten things up.

Good luck everyone!

Here's a NASTY splash of colour that didn't make me very happy  , my agave parryi 'snowflake' ( I think- I'm bad for losing labels) has some nasty infection. Rather annoyed about this as it was looking lovely -from a distance.
The powder you can see is ant & crawling insect powder I was trying out as this one is tasty to WFT & a friend reckoned it's a good deterrent.

and from a distance it looks fine, it's going to be a big plant with good colours.

Cheating a bit here. As there are no flowers open in the greenhouse I've taken a photo of this Auricula that I grew from seed in 2012. It has survived all the wind and rain of recent days (weeks!).

Plenty of colour on my young Notocactus leninghausii plantlets. The brown dots are seeds from the parent plant towering overhead.

Very ordinary I know, but couldnt resist posting when the flower came out this morning in the conservatory. It is a Schlumbergera truncata cultivar selected from the masses at our local garden centre last week. Never had much luck re-flowering these the following season for some reason, but hey here goes (again)!
