November Competition: Caudiciforms

Post by lzrddr »

This month's competition is caudiciforms- entire plants or just small parts of them. Two ideas below:

This is one of my Dioscorea elephantides that I grew from seed. I was amazed how easily they germinated and the percentage that came up, close to 100%. It's not very big yet but I thought I would put it in here as the leaves look so young and fresh.

I like this thread and I hope there will be a lot of partecipants (caudiciforms are spectacular plants), so yesterday I took a picture of a nice small caudiciform plant that I have recently bought, Monadenium mafingense, now Euphorbia mafingensis.

I know the picture's background is not good, it's just my caotic balcony.

Wow , those d.gigas are beautiful, I'm very envious  .

Here's one of my favourites ( at the moment), it's Pseudobombax ellipticum it originally had a single head but I chopped that off & it looks much better with more branches.
After a repot early this year * plenty of water I was expecting the caudex to expand more showing the green veination but instead it's now gone peanut 'shell' shaped & has a lump in the pot base.

Looking good at the moment is Euphorbia decuidua,
euphorbia decidua 12_14.jpg
My female dioscorea elephantipes, no flowers this year and still needing to grow more bumps after they fell off.

Monadenium echinulatum, I can't call them euphorbia even if they are genetically supposed to be that similar, as the flowers & growing conditions needed are very different.

Jatropha cathartica

Adenia digitata, an odd plant for me as it hasn't really settled in to my growing conditions even after two years.

Hi Riny,
Yes they are lovely aren't they, I do have a larger one but it came unrooted with a bit of rot so I'm not tempting fate by taking photo's of it.
There was some huge ones at ELK this year but they were U G L Y, I have some small ones I grew from seed as I didn't manage to source one until about 2 years ago so ask me nicely next year and I might part with one  .
I have two pots of these interestingly the plants in the shallow pot look better than the plants in a 5" square pot but maybe if I unpot them they will have bigger caudexes and it's just the shallow pot plants have to show their roots as there is less space.

Here's one you will like Fockea angustifolia

Here's one you have( I think), Ipompea holubii, it's quite nice having a look in the image files especially as it's frosty outside and I don't fancy popping out to the greenhouses.

I love Ipomoea.
I have a big Ipomoea bolusiana one month now. I can't wait till it's going out of dormancy.
