My back-yard-sill...

Post by AnTTun »

... is in complete disorder at the moment because it doesn't exist :) I had to take it apart when I started rebuilding back yard and placed collection on porch. I shall move them to basement soon, but not before day temp goes to 5 C. Exception is few succulents that I move in and out after night temps went below 10 C. And seedlings and grafting stock that are in 'chicken box' :)

Unfortunaely I have serious problem with my camera, so pics are blurry at lower left corner. On the other hand I don't have fancy plants, so 'visitors' wont miss much. 2/3 are survivors from my old collection, tough ones that survived 20 years of neglection (4/5 plants from that time were not that lucky :( my sin). 1/3 are plants I purchased, got or traded past two years.

Anyway, I plan to build them new home this winter and I'm sure they will look nicer when I take them there in spring, sort them and all that...

Winter volunteers first:

These will stay outside, near glass (warmth), and I will cover them with styrofoam when temp goes below -5 C. And.. agave is simply dirty because I sprayed them with rain water (not some fancy agave kind) :)

Basement squad:

Few succulents aka wardrobe gang. Thats the only unheated part of my house with temp 10-15 C over winter:

And sempervivums (almost forgot them) :

Orostachys:

They spend whole year outside at weather's mercy. Their new home will look like this:

Outter circle is theirs. Inner will get concrete layer and will be used for winter hard cacti (that will go back to porch during winter, just in case, unless I think of easy and cheap way to warm them up a bit).

And thats all folks :)

P.S. I will probably post additions to collection and other interesting things regarding it in the future. Like small diary about my collection. If you don't mind, of course. Thanks for stopping by ;)

I like forbies a lot actually. Mostly because they are so differnt and yet they belong to same genus (I guess thats the word). So I hope to have at least 2 x 20 in the future :)

Regarding your question Tina, big (or clumpy) ones are mostly old ones :) Only one old euphorbia is e. meloformis(?) that shares pot with 4 other cacti favorites of mine.

It was beautiful day here yesterday so I worked a bit more on 'bricky garden'. I have added gravel for drainage, and plastic net as protection against under-the-surface-creatures (plus hopeful ease in case removal of plants is needed), and it looked like this:

Image

Then I put plants and added soil mixture (not really a mixture, loam & regular soil for flowers only), and I got eternal home for 8 sempervivums and orostachys spinosus:

Smaller circle is supposed to be finished and filled this week...

Lets update this with some news / pics...

Almost finished / populated bricky garden looks like this:

Image

Cacti home is fully finished after 'only' 50-60 hours of do-it-all-by-yourself work. Top surface is 3x0.9 m, its 75 cms tall, 3 front panels are detachable so I can access storage (read: mess) area. It looks like this:

In case rain is to come, it takes me 3 mins to turn it into this:

Image

Tho, I keep first and last part 'on' so roof is the only thing I have to put down before rain starts. That roof took me quite some time untill I found out how to make it. I didn't want it to stick high in the air, but I had to find out how to avoid rain to leak inside when its unfold. So far it works pretty good.

And few pics of part of my collection:

And grafted babies:

More to come soon....

Just an update to bricky garden. That 'grass' I've sown (dichondra repens) spreads really fast...
